The Yoshinobu Rice Terraces:

Stretching across Motoyama Town in Kochi Prefecture, right in the heart of Shikoku's Reihoku region. This stunning scenery is not simply a creation of nature.

For around 600 years, the people living on this land have cleared the mountains, stacked stones one by one, channeled water, and protected these fields across generations. It is a landscape co-created by humanity and nature.

On this tour, you will walk slowly through the rice terraces with a local guide to discover the history and daily life woven into the scenery. You will also learn about Nonaka Kenzan, a legendary figure essential to the story of Motoyama Town. During the Edo period, Nonaka Kenzan revolutionized the region's water management, forestry, and logistics, driving the Tosa Domain's greatest reforms. If he were alive today, he would be a powerhouse akin to someone simultaneously serving as a Prefectural Governor, Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, and Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries all at once. However, because his reforms were so bold, they invited heavy backlash, ultimately leading to his political downfall.

"The more capable a leader is, the more enemies they make."

We will bring history to life with these intriguing behind-the-scenes stories and relatable modern analogies. We hope this time allows you to feel the deep history of this land—something you could never fully appreciate just by looking at the view. After our stroll, we will return to the observation deck to serve local tea and sweets while you look out over the terraces.

Savor the lingering afterglow of your journey as time slows down and you take in the crisp air of Motoyama Town. Why not step away from the bustle of the city, feel the nostalgic breeze of the countryside, and awaken your five senses on this special guided tour? At the end of our walk, a delicious local treat awaits you alongside breathtaking views.
