Reasons Why the Asemi River is Japan’s Ultimate River Swimming Spot

Hi everyone! We are Ikken-yado Sameura, a private vacation rental located in Motoyama Town, Kochi Prefecture, right in the heart of Shikoku. We renovated an 80-year-old traditional Japanese house into a cozy, whole-house rental limited to just one group per day!

The rainy season is arriving a bit late this year, which means we’ve been having consecutive days that feel like peak summer. When the weather gets like this, there’s only one thing on everyone’s mind: river swimming!

From our inn, it is just a 2-minute walk to the crystal-clear waters of the Asemi River (Asemigawa). It’s a tributary of the Yoshino River, the largest river in Shikoku.

This area is actually one of the premier river-play spots in Shikoku! In the summer, it comes alive with families swimming and people enjoying BBQs along the rocky riverbanks. On Google Maps, you’ll find it listed as the "Asemi River Swimming Area" (汗見川遊泳場). Despite the name, it’s not a commercial resort or managed facility—it’s just a beautiful, natural riverbank. And of course, admission is completely free!

3 Reasons Why the Asemi River is the Best River Spot in Japan

You might be thinking, "Aren't all rivers the same? Shikoku is famous for clean water, so what makes the Asemi River so special?" Let us share the three reasons why this specific spot is so extraordinary.

1. The Water is Breathtakingly Clear (Thanks to Fascinating Geology!)

You might think, "Well, obviously, it's the Japanese countryside!" And it's true—Shikoku has a very low population, so almost all of our rivers are clean enough for sweetfish (Ayu) and trout (Amego) to swim around freely.

But when we say "clear" here, we are talking about a stunning, translucent emerald green. Interestingly, other nearby tributaries of the same river system don't look like this; some actually look quite dark. The secret lies entirely in the geology.

The Asemi River flows through a geological zone known as the "Sambagawa Metamorphic Belt." It shares the exact same geological formation as the famous Oboke and Koboke Gorges (renowned for world-class white-water rafting). If you are a geology enthusiast, this place is an absolute paradise!

To put it simply, the rock in this zone is incredibly hard. Because it is so hard, it doesn't dissolve into the water. Since the earth doesn't wash away into the stream, the water stays perfectly clear without becoming muddy. Additionally, the rocks themselves are whitish, which reflects the light and makes the emerald green color pop beautifully.

(Fun fact: The softer, darker rocks found on the south side of town make the river look different, but that soft soil is exactly what allowed the region's famous, majestic terraced rice fields to be built. Nature always has a beautiful balance!)

2. The Water is Comfortably Warm and Relatively Safe

Even on a scorching 35°C (95°F) summer day, mountain rivers can be shockingly cold—sometimes your lips turn blue after just 10 minutes of swimming!

However, the Asemi River is much more forgiving. Thanks to the local terrain and a small gentle dam (weir) built nearby, the water slows down and forms a wide, gentle natural pool that sits at a depth of about 1 meter (3 feet). Because the water slows down here and gets plenty of direct sunlight, it warms up to a comfortable temperature where you can truly enjoy swimming.

Because it is relatively shallow and calm, it is a fantastic and safe environment for children to play in. (Of course, it is nature, so you always need to stay alert and practice safety, but compared to other wild rivers, it is very beginner-friendly!)

3. Unbeatable Convenience: Restrooms and Supermarkets are Nearby

Finding a wild river spot with modern conveniences is incredibly rare in Japan, but the Asemi River has it all.

Just a 1-minute walk from the river is Yoshino Sports Park, where you can use the public restrooms. Most visitors park their cars in the park's parking lot (which holds about 30 cars and gets quite packed in the summer).

Even better, the river is incredibly close to the town center. Just a 3-minute drive away, you’ll find supermarkets, drugstores, convenience stores, and local diners. It’s the perfect combination: a pristine, untouched natural river with the comfort of town amenities just around the corner.

We highly recommend stopping by "Suehiro," a local supermarket just 3 minutes away by car (or a 10-minute walk). Every local knows Suehiro! Pick up some fresh rice balls (Onigiri) and Japanese fried chicken (Karaage) before heading to the river. They even have a small 100-yen shop inside where you can grab river-play gear!

Come Visit Us This Summer!

To wrap it up, the Asemi River Swimming Area offers crystal-clear emerald water, comfortable temperatures, a safer environment, and incredible convenience with restrooms and shops nearby. As far as we know, it’s the best river spot in Japan!

If you want to experience this paradise without rushing, come stay with us at Ikken-yado Sameura. Our renovated traditional home accommodates up to 8 guests, and we are completely pet-friendly, so you can bring your furry friends along for the adventure too!

We hope to see you in the heart of Shikoku this summer! See you next time!
